The Departmental Federation of Hunters (FDC) of Haute Vienne has participated actively with local hunting groups and farmers in the management of this NATURA 2000 site.

On this site, the acquisition (in 1999 via the Foundation for the Protection of Habitats of Wild Fauna) and the creation of a preserve area with two lakes (Murat and Moustiers) covering 172 ha was requested by local hunters. The site hosts five natural habitats, three animal species, one plant species falling within the scope of the Habitats Directive, as well as a very large number of migratory birds (more than 1,000 birds, including some very rare species, hibernate there).

In 2003, the FDC was entrusted by the administration with the task of preparing the NATURA 2000 management plan in partnership with all stakeholders, involving in particular preparing scientific studies. It was then charged with monitoring the management plan?s implementation.

In 2005, an ornithological observatory intended for the general public was set up. In 2006, the FDC signed a NATURA 2000 contract with the French government under which it receives financial aid for its management role.
