to facilitate the collection of national bag statistics Hunting bag statistics have not been collected on a regular basis. Three national surveys have been carried out by the ONCFS, covering the 1974/1975, 1983/1984 and 1998/1999 seasons.
The last two surveys used the same methods, and relied on demographic information supplied by the national population (human) census and information about the numbers of hunters in each parish. Sample sizes for each Département were determined after stratification to take into account local population size, hunter presence and participation rates.
Individual hunters were selected by a random selection first of parishes within each Département, then of hunters within each chosen parish. Each selected hunter (76,810 in the 1998/99 survey) was asked by postal questionnaire to supply a range of information about their hunting experiences and the species and numbers hunted. Participation was not compulsory, and the number of respondents for the 1998/99 survey (after two reminders) was 24,933 (32.5%).
To check for bias between respondents and non-respondents, a follow-up telephone survey of 1000 non-respondents was carried out. Hunters provided the bag data
