The Migratory Birds Office of the Italian Federation of Hunting frequently bases its work on sustainable hunting (and their institutional approach) on data collected by hunters through important research projects. These projects use diverse scientific methods based on sampling, satellite telemetry and ringing.

This makes it possible to implement effective management decisions and to improve the review of bird hunting periods in Europe (Key Concepts document). Satellite telemetry provides precise location of the transmitter during the an entire spring migration phase.

Some specimens can be monitored for more than one migratory cycle. Unlike ringing methods, satellite telemetry facilitates mapping the breeding and wintering sites independently from the activity of  capturing and re-capturing.
