PS Mojzesovo – Hunting Society in Mojzesovo – is hunting on and managing 1007 hectares of low land area of the agricultural part of Slovakia.

Already few years ago PS Mojzesovo started with the increase of the biodiversity of their managed landscape. By installing 21 artificial water sources they provided water to the locations, where the small game species but also other wildlife in the area was suffering from lack of water.

Since year 2016, they have been managing the land that is the property of the members of the society, but also rented 2,3 hectares from small owners. All together, a land of 12 hectares is managed. On these land areas they are continuously planting special grass and herbs mixtures, that are providing cover, food and mating/nesting possibilities for small game (hare, pheasant, partridge).

The rotation of the planting is in two to three years cycles, so the habitat is always partially available to the species which lives in it. Of course, management of the predators in the area is intensive. An average of 30-35 foxes are eliminated per year in their hunting area.

The effort is bringing positive results and the numbers of hares and pheasants are increasing from year to year.

POLICY RELEVANCE

This project shows that hunters play a key role in managing rural areas and adopting measures which are beneficial to biodiversity. This is in line with the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 which calls for 10% of agricultural areas under high-diversity landscape features.
