The Curlew Conservation Programme operates in a manner that could be described as locally-led, with local teams acting with landowners to help breeding Curlew in six of the most important areas in Ireland for the species. The local teams are generally comprised of a Curlew Advisory Officer, a local Curlew Champion and a Nest Protection Officer.
The Nest Protection Officer (NPO) is in all cases a hunter. The role of the NPO includes among other things the protection of Curlew nests by use of nest protection fences and/or legal and humane control of Fox, Mink, Hooded Crow and Magpie.
