In our modern world, there is still too much litter on the doorsteps of our towns and cities, in our countryside and in our rivers.
In response, J’aime la Nature Propre (JLNP) is a participative nature clean-up operation created to combat this rubbish problem created by society. In addition to its environmental and educational aims, the scheme is also designed to encourage exchanges between users of nature in rural areas, so that we can enjoy nature together more effectively. The project is run by the Fédération Nationale des Chasseurs (FNC).
Participation in this project is based on a voluntary basis, depending on your free time. The initiative is open to all, any local bodies or institutions can sponsor the initiative and collaborate for the successful implementation of the project.
POLICY RELEVANCE
In light of the ongoing policy discussions about Europe’s new Nature Restoration Law, here’s a successful habitat restoration project in France. Conservation action is essential for biodiversity and the efforts of hunters should be well integrated into future European and national frameworks to support local restoration actions. This project is another excellent example of how hunters are already contributing to the EU’s Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 and nature restoration targets.
JLNP
JLNP brings together the federal network of hunters, anglers, those involved in protecting aquatic environments and outdoor sports. Not forgetting local authorities and businesses ready to commit to protecting the environment by joining in this initiative. Together they have already collected tonnes of waste. In 2022, 8,000 m3 were collected and almost 10,000 m3 in 2023.
Furthermore, it encourages French hunters, who are already active in their own right in protecting their local territory, and in particular in keeping forests, marshes and rural areas uncontaminated, to action.
This national scheme brings together two other initiatives:
“2022 was a transitional year for handing over organisational skills to the FNC, and from 2023 onwards the “Clean Rivers” projects will be brought together with JLNP.

Waste collection must be carried out in complete safety. Here is the essential information you need to know:
To take part in the best possible conditions, you will need suitable clothing:
- A reflective waistcoat
- Appropriate clothing
- Thick gloves
- Shoes with reinforced soles
Once the operation has started:
- Avoid areas that are difficult to access and/or dangerous
- Do not collect waste that is too heavy on your own
- Do not pick up waste whose content and/or level of danger is not clearly identified
- Take care when collecting waste bearing hazard symbols
- Ask the organiser for advice if you have any doubts about unidentified waste.
Covid-19 – Respect social distancing:
- Greet each other without shaking hands or making contact
- Maintain a distance of at least two metres from others
- Wear a mask when physical distance is not possible
- Avoid touching your face
- If you cough or sneeze, cover your nose and mouth with your elbow or a handkerchief
- Use digital tools
- Stay at home if you feel unwell
- Limit collection groups to a maximum of 6 people
- At the end of the collection, remove your gloves and mask, place them in a special bag and wash your hands.

French Office for Biodiversity (OFB) and the JLNP
The French Office for Biodiversity (OFB) is a public body dedicated to safeguarding biodiversity in France. One of its priorities is to provide an urgent response to the challenges of preserving living things.
The OFB brings together staff from the French Biodiversity Agency (AFB) and the National Office for Hunting and Wildlife (ONCFS). Bringing these two establishments together in the fight to protect nature means that we can pool our expertise on aquatic, terrestrial and marine environments and present a united front against the threats to biodiversity in France. Bringing together these two entities, whose staff are based all over France and in the French overseas territories, also means that we can be firmly rooted in the regions and take action at a local level.
J’aime la Nature Propre is a project financed by the eco-contribution scheme. Under this scheme, every hunter who validates his or her hunting licence contributes €5, with a further €10 from the government, to fund practical actions to promote biodiversity: hedge planting, restoration of forest and wetland environments, maintenance of wildlife habitats, nature workcamps, and so on. A total of nearly €15 million a year is devoted to biodiversity thanks to the hunters’ eco-tax.
No fewer than 590 projects have been carried out since 2019 by the hunters’ federations, the OFB and their partners!
